Tips For Preparation Of A Personal Funeral Service

By Paul Silva

Death is one of the harsh realities of our existence that we are never ready for. Conducting a service in memory of the dead is a very old tradition that has undergone tremendous changes. Conventionally, a funeral service was carried out in church and the departed was bid farewell with readings from scriptures as well as a eulogy. But, as a larger number of people are willing to go with personalized funeral services, the practice has witnessed a change over the years.

Conducting a funeral service right after the death of a near and dear one can be a very arduous task for any family. One of the myths about funeral services is that it is legally mandatory for the family of the deceased to organize a service, but this is incorrect. Secondly, many people think that a service has to be organized in a church, which is also a misconception. It is to be noted that even though conventionally such services were carried out in a church, with the trend of personalizing, many funeral services are being held within the premises of the departed. Thirdly, such a personalized service does not require use of a casket or even a pastor or clergy to conduct the proceedings.

With the rise in demand for personal funeral services, it is important to keep the dead person in mind while planning for it. The choice of music should be from among the personal options of the deceased, though it is preferable to have soothing music. You have the option of playing recorded music or engaging a live music band.

Personal items can be displayed in the form of a collage, thereby showing the world the real character of the deceased. Address is very crucial in all funeral services including the personal ones. It could be a poem, a song or a personal speech that reflects upon the dead person.

Lastly, it is recommended to present the people assembled for the service with some mementoes that help them keep the memories of the deceased alive for a long time.
