Pyorrhea, better known as periodontitis (the late or advanced stages of gum disease), is another frequent form of gum infection. Gingivitis is the starting stage of periodontitis, and over time it progresses and affects the ligaments and bones supporting the teeth. Gum inflammation and swelling occurs, and if left untreated, could lead to halitosis and even tooth loss since the gums become incapable of supporting the tooth.

The most common causes of periodontitis are chronic illness, a poor diet, and excessive alcohol and tobacco use. Taking on a gum infection can be a long and difficult battle. There are more destructive forms of gum disease that can end to tooth loss, along with other serious health complications. But, if effective dental care is set up through daily brushing and flossing regular dental cleanings by your dentist fighting gum disease could be much easier and the need for to cure gum infections may not be necessary. Always remember that preventing gum infections from striking in the first place is the best option in protecting your teeth and gums from complicated health problems.
