How Funeral Services Work

By Leah Ford

The demise of a loved one is a harrowing experience, and preparing for their funeral can be distressing. But like most disturbing things in life, it must be confronted, and you will need to make some arrangements for the funeral service. You can get the help you need in making the arrangements from any funeral home, but you must keep certain things in mind before making the move.

The dead person's life and beliefs are reflected in the funeral and hence, it is necessary to organize it properly. Most of the funeral services follow a particular pattern, though they are flexible enough to accommodate any cultural inclinations that the deceased may have had or his family members believe in.

The first stage of a funeral service can extend from a few hours to many days and it is called visitation. In this, relatives and acquaintances assemble in memory of the deceased. Then begin the standard funeral services, which can take place in a chapel, a mortuary, a church or any other place that can act as a proper memorial for the deceased person. A hearse or funeral coach would need to be booked if the funeral is to be held in an outdoor location.

After this service, the gatherers normally proceed to the cemetery for the graveside service. This can be managed by either a family member of the deceased or the clergy based on the decision of the family. You also have to take care of various other things like the type of flowers you want for the service, if you want to display a picture of the dead person and who will be the person leading the service.

The final phase of the proceedings is the burial, and the spot for it can be any place as per the choice of the family or of the dead person. The deceased can be buried in family plots or in mausoleums, or be cremated and have their ashes spread where they had intended.
