Fun on the Beach in Llandudno

By Peter Hughes

If a beach is an essential attraction when you go on holiday then the town of Llandudno in North Wales is the perfect location. Llandudno is packed full of Victorian charm with top quality hotels and guest houses which line the long promenade and is beautifully positioned between two headlands called the Great and Little Orme's. Llandudno has two beaches and the main beach is called the North Shore which follows the promenade and has plenty of golden sand to explore.

The Great Orme is located at the western end of the North Shore and is only a short walk away from the beach. It is an excellent place to explore with plenty of country walks and wonderful attractions including Happy Valley, Ski Llandudno, and The Great Orme Visitor Centre. Walking to the summit is easily done if you're feeling energetic and there are spectacular views of the North Wales coastline across to Anglesey and Rhyl.

There are of course easier ways than walking to get to the Great Orme summit and two of the nicest are the Great Orme Tramway and the Great Orme cable car. The Great Orme Tramway is just five minutes from the beach and takes you on a steep journey to the summit on Victorian trams that date back over 100 years. Alternatively if you fancy some excellent views of Llandudno bay then walk to Happy Valley and ride the Great Orme cable car to the summit. A great option is to to ride up to the summit on one and descend on the other.

Back on Llandudno beach and you'll surely be tempted by Llandudno Pier as it reaches out into the Irish Sea. The pier was built in Victorian times and still retains much of its original charm today. A range of small shops and kiosks are located along the pier as you walk along it towards the pier head, make sure you turn around and have a camera ready for some really good views of the beach and promenade. There's a large children's play centre on the pier with bouncy castles and amusements when you fancy a break and a Punch and Judy show by the pier entrance for younger children.

If you're feeling hungry there's plenty of great refreshments and places to eat within easy walking distance of the beach. Llandudno's main shopping street is just a short walk from the sand and is lined with cafes and coffee houses. If you're looking for something a little more substantial there are plenty of restaurants close by catering for all tastes from British to Italian and Indian. Alternatively why not clean up and have a night at the North Wales Theatre which is located on the promenade.

Whatever you're requirement on holiday if a beautiful beach is essential then Llandudno fits the bill perfectly. The beach is never far from your accommodation and there's plenty of other attractions to keep the children entertained. After a fun day on the beach it's just a short walk back to your accommodation and then onwards to enjoy Llandudno's nightlife.
