Reasons Behind Acne Scars And Their Treatment Options

By Edward Spencer

Acne is a nagging problem particularly for women, with its sudden appearance and the permanent scars that it causes. Irrespective of your abhorrence for it, acne occurs throughout the teenage years of almost everyone and a lot of effort is needed for removing these bad looking marks and stopping them from reappearing.

When the sebum secreted by skin glands comes in contact with bacteria, it results in an infection, which is referred to as acne. During the healing period of this infection, a fibrous protein called collagen is generated. On the level of collagen going below normal, tiny depressions are created on the face and on its amount being excessive, distinct protrusions appear. Either of these factors can give rise to acne scars. Teenagers usually suffer a lot more than others as the levels of hormones rise at a high rate at the time of puberty leading to increased release of sebum.

Some of the common reasons behind an acne infection are application of cosmetic products that do not suit the skin type, intake of contraceptive pills and medicines, and other genetic factors. Certain lifestyle factors like tension, improper diet, and residing in a polluted area can also result in acne. However, contrary to common belief, there is no scientific link between oily or junk food and acne.

In spite of availability of a number of herbal skin-care products and ointments for curing acne available in the stores, it is advisable to visit a doctor if the infection increases or appears again and again. Abstaining from squeezing the acne or poking it with any pointed object is a must to avoid aggravation of acne.

Many affected people now go for many cosmetic treatments to make the scars disappear and get a glowing skin. Surgery and laser treatment are among the most successful ways of permanently getting rid of acne scars, but a lot of other innovative cures are also available nowadays. You should see a good dermatologist who would be able to determine your type of skin and recommend a proper treatment.
